An Invitation to Health ~ Drink Oxylent. Breathe Life.
The latest products to hit the shelves in the beverage and bottled water aisles are “water enhancers.” These small bottles of concentrated liquid drops are intended to be added to water to add flavor, taste, and color.
First launched in the U.S. in 2011, they have since grown rapidly. The American Beverage Association estimates that twenty percent of households that buy bottled water now also buy these “water enhancers.”
The latest variations of these flavored drops give these products an energy or fitness marketing spin by adding B vitamins or electrolytes. Marketing spin is all it is, however, as these “water enhancer” products are often not as healthy as they claim.
Of course there is a range of quality available with these “water enhancers,” as there is with all products, but many are sweetened with a blend of artificial sweeteners (including sucralose or Splenda, and acesulfame potassium or acesulfame-K), which is how they offer zero-calorie products. Read more about research into the potential health risks of artificial sweeteners here: http://wp.me/p2U5kR-54
In addition to artificial sweeteners, many of these products also contain other potentially risky additives such as artificial colors, chemical preservatives, and other artificial additives used for texture, color, or flavor. Here’s the ingredient list for one popular “water enhancer:”
Water, Citric Acid, Salt, Propylene Glycol, Potassium Phosphate, Malic Acid, Contains Less than 2% of Niacinamide, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Natural Flavor, Sucralose and Acesulfame Potassium, Potassium Citrate, Polysorbate 60, Red 40, Blue 1, Potassium Sorbate
As you can see, that’s a lot of artificial additives! The tiny amounts of vitamins this product contains isn’t nearly enough to benefit your health, and the several different risky additives and preservatives certainly don’t help your health either! Many of these artificial additives are rated as health hazards by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). (Visit http://www.ewg.org to learn more.)
Be sure to read the labels on these products carefully. You may even have to go online to get the full ingredient list for many of these products.
