Women interested in nonpharmacologic remedies for nausea are often interested in knowing which vitamins have been shown to help nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.
The vitamin with the most research behind it for helping nausea is vitamin B6. Controlled trials have shown the efficacy of vitamin B6 for reducing vomiting and improving nausea. Dosages used have typically been 10 mg three times a day.2
Another important finding is that preconception multivitamins appear to be an effective prevention for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. A randomized trial found that women who took multivitamins before conception had decreased vomiting and nausea in pregnancy compared to women who did not.2
For women affected by nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, taking prenatal vitamins can be very challenging—precisely at the time when they need nutrients the most. Swallowing pills and keeping them down is simply not possible for many women.
That’s why effervescent prenatal multivitamins are often a better alternative to traditional pill-form vitamins. Instead of swallowing pills, you simply add a packet of powder to water and sip a tasty sparkling drink. Your body gets the nutrients it needs—including the B6 that can help with nausea—and you don’t have to choke down a pill. Many pregnant women are often thrilled to discover effervescent prenatal vitamins.
Choosing a prenatal vitamin that contains a particular form of iron—Ferrochel®, which is made by Albion minerals—can also be very helpful for many pregnant women. The reason why is because the form of iron found in many prenatal vitamins can often cause nausea and/or constipation. Ferrochel is a superior form of iron that causes less gastrointestinal upset. Pregnant women report less constipation and nausea with Ferrochel iron.
The American Pregnancy Association (APA) recommends Prenatal Oxylent as its daily prenatal vitamin of choice. Prenatal Oxylent is an effervescent prenatal multivitamin that contains only the highest quality ingredients—including vitamin B6 and Ferrochel iron—with no sugar, GMOs, gluten, dairy, soy, caffeine, herbs, artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners or additives. And it’s a sparkling cranberry raspberry drink that tastes great!
